FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December
16, 2004
Quirkle.com releases
"Quzzle" - A Challenging Puzzle That Could Take The Full Christmas
Holiday to Solve.
Inventor turns to
computer science to help design simple yet difficult puzzle
Midland
Park, NJ - December 16, 2004 - Quirkle.com announces the release of
Quzzle(tm) - the result of inventor Jim Lewis' goal to design a puzzle
that is both simple and complex - the most difficult puzzle with the
fewest pieces. The 9-piece Quzzle has a deceptively simple task: Move
one block from one corner to another - yet it might take till after
Christmas to find the solution. Mr. Lewis studied puzzle design,
learned an advanced programming language and wrote computer software to
design Quzzle. The design popped out after 25 hours of continuous
computer processing time.
With the goal to design the most difficult puzzle with the fewest
pieces, Mr. Lewis turned to his degree in computer science. His new
puzzle is similar to a sliding block puzzle designed 100 years ago
called "Dad's Puzzle." Dad's Puzzle is so named because it reflects the
task of the head of the family rearranging pieces of furniture
including a grand piano. In puzzle design, difficulty relates in part
to the number of pieces. Due to a mathematical concept called
"combinatorial explosion," adding too many pieces can make the puzzle
impractical even for a computer to solve.
To achieve his design goals, Mr. Lewis turned his programming skills to
the task of writing a computer program to help design the puzzle. Mr.
Lewis wrote a program he dubbed the "Computer Assisted Puzzle Analyzer"
(CAPA) in Haskell, a little-known advanced programming language. After
several months of programming and running his tests, Mr. Lewis arrived
at a puzzle that is the optimal combination of simplicity and
complexity - the sign of a great puzzle. He claims it's the most
complex puzzle possible within it's simple style.
At $19.95 the Quzzle is available through http://www.quirkle.com
, makers of Quagnet, an amazingly powerful magnetic toy, and Quark, the
highest performance spinning top.
A complete online Media kit for the Quzzle is available at: http://www.ascendpr.com/quirkle/quzzlemkit.html
