Longest Spinning Top gets Nickel-plated treatment

Amazing Laser-Balanced Spinning Top spins for more than a quarter hour

Midland Park, NJ, - November 16, 2004 - Quirkle.com today announced the Nickel-plated Quark Top - the ultra high performance Quark spinning top.  The Quark Top is a remarkable spinning top that will spin for over a quarter of an hour powered by a single twist of fingers - about 10 times as long as a conventional top.  The new nickel plating improves laser reflection for higher accuracy when balancing.  The new Quark top retails for $49.95.  With conventional tops typically spinning for just one or two minutes, the Quark top is the highest performance spinning top in the world, according to inventor Jim Lewis.  The Quark top is available in nickel-plated brass, tungsten, and solid 14-karat gold.  The hi-tech gadget includes a glass surface for spinning, surface leveling shims, laser beam for precision balancing and a set of balancing weights.

Named after the "top quark" sub-atomic particle, the Quark top is now available at Quirkle.com..

According to Quirkle president Jim Lewis, the exceptionally long spin times are the result of a carefully engineered combination of weight distribution, precision-machined parts, balancing technology, tip topology, material selection, handle optimization, and exacting proportions.  Most of the Quark top's mass is located in the dense flywheel with everything towards the center

Balance plays a critical role in the Quark top's long spin times.  Six inverted counterweight pockets allow for adjustment of weight distribution to bring the center of gravity directly over the center of the tip.  An included laser assists in determining proper balance in a process where counterweights are moved in a specific pattern.

The Quark top spins on a tip made of dense tungsten carbide to prevent deformation.  The handle is optimized by providing enough diameter to allow powerful spins, yet small enough to generate several revolutions during launch.  Finally, the simple contour of the disk reduces surface area and aerodynamic drag.

Quark top specifications:
  •   Balance accuracy - 10 microns
  •   Balancing method - Optical - laser
  •   Counterweight pockets - 6
  •   Counterweight size - 10 milligrams
  •   Tip material: Tungsten Carbide

In addition to the normal use of a spinning top as a toy and high-tech conversation piece, the Quark top can be used as a timer for business meetings, a decision-maker, and to play one of several games described in its instructions. Educators can demonstrate numerous laws of physics, engineering, math, calculus, differential equations and more with the Quark Top.

The Quark top is priced at $49.95 in nickel-plated brass, $149.95 in tungsten and $2,495 in solid 14K Gold.  Custom imprinted logos and a dreidel version are available.
The Quark top can be purchased online at www.quirkle.com or by calling 201-447-6991, fax: 201-447-6921, or by mailing to Quirkle.com, 666 Godwin Ave., Midland Park, NJ 07432. Domestic and international shipping is available. Dealer inquires are welcome.
